Opening Day Ceremonies Highlight Renovated Bellefonte Ballfield

On May 12th, 2012, the Bellefonte VFW Teener League celebrated the opening day of their baseball season on Tanney Field at Parkview Heights Park, Bellefonte, PA. This year’s opening day ceremonies highlighted the recent expansion and renovation of Tanney Field and Weber Murphy Fox (WMF) was there to help throw out the first pitch.

WMF worked directly with Centre county Commissioners, Borough staff, and the League’s Field Committee to successfully guide the project through the PA DCNR review and approval process. The park and baseball facility improvements incorporated grant funding from the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Growing Greener II Fund, the Centre County Visitor Center, the Borough of Bellefonte, and the Bellefonte Sunrise Rotary.

During the development process, WMF added a team member from their in-house Construction Management Department to reconcile the program goals with grant budgets and to assess the feasibility of specific improvements in relation to league’s primary goals of enlarging the field and improving drainage. Value added services included detailed cost estimating through the design phase. WMF also helped the Borough Grant Administrator coordinate in-kind work on the new dugouts with the Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology.

Design phase studies informed Borough decisions to expand the outfield by relocating existing power lines. The result is a longer field intended to make play more competitive for the league’s older age groups. Corresponding field renovations provide positive surface drainage for fewer rain delays. Park playground and parking improvements include accessibility upgrades for all users.

The project is another example of how WMF’s development strategy successfully combined the Leagues vision, multiple grants, and matching funds into one process for efficient approvals, competitive bidding, and complete construction. “It was a long awaited and special day for the league and your participation made it even more special,” said Ed Adams, Field Improvement Committee Chairman of the Bellefonte VFW Teener League. “Feel free to come back any time and watch a game at one of the best Teener League fields in the state of Pennsylvania.”
