New Science Laboratory Building

Lorain County Community College

LCCC needed a new Laboratory Sciences Building to manage the increasing enrollment in their Allied Health & Nursing Programs. It was the team’s intent to enhance the LEED philosophy with the Labs21 Approach and pursue LEED Silver NC. The effort to create a sustainable project required multiple meetings with college personnel including lab professors, the Dean, physical plant / facilities personal, and administration.

The project team and LCCC stakeholders worked together to incorporate the proposed project open space into the overall campus conservation district, along with a collection system that directs roof rainwater to a bioswale. The team also collaborated closely on an energy modeling process that evaluated energy conservation measures including:

  • lab exhaust system controls and energy recovery
  • solar shading on the south facing windows
  • building envelop performance
  • lighting controls

Because the building is lab space with high exhaust and energy use, we established a deep understanding of the exact uses of spaces to maximize the energy conservation benefits of the system.
