Harry E. Slep Student Center

Penn State Altoona

In the center of the Penn State Altoona campus sits the student union building. Originally the campus dining hall, the building holds a privileged position at the head of the campus lake. WMF began working with the campus in 2011 to verify program goals for an addition and renovation to the beautiful mid-century modern building. The campus population has grown and student use of the building had changed over the decades and the building needed updates to respond to student needs including gathering spaces for group study, club activities, relaxation and gaming as well as more formal University space needs such as accommodating meetings, parties and orientations. This building is the living room of campus and the design team ensured that it would shine in this role.

An existing portico was enclosed and an entrance vestibule was added. The existing multi-function space was reorganized into 3 key areas that could be reconfigured into one space with the repositioning of glass walls. A gas fireplace and help desk were incorporated as the focal points of the building.

The project was completed in August 2012.
