The Village Student Housing

Penn State Harrisburg

The project consists of new 75 Student Housing Apartments each with 4 single bedrooms, living room, and full kitchens. The site is immediately adjacent to Penn State Harrisburg’s Campus Academic Core.

The new student housing presented a number of opportunities: provide housing adjacent to the new Library and new food court in the Olmsted Building; enhance the Campus Master Plan by providing pedestrian traffic to and from the center of the Campus; and significantly enhance the Campus image and character.

The solution organized the housing into 8 buildings situated to create a series of courtyards. The singles housing provides a strong sense of entry either through a gate structure at one end or through a Community Center at the other. The site is developed as a sequence of spaces – entrance to the project, entrance to a courtyard, entrance to a building and entrance to a unit – each of these is observable and designed to provide a sense of community and security. The Community Center includes administrative space, social lounge and kitchen, special events, program space and supports the living/learning mission.
