CLIENT GOALS

Lorain County Community College’s Division of Allied Health and Nursing needed updated and increased space to accommodate the increasing enrollment demand. The programming and feasibility study encompassed 312,700 GSF of space for three primary divisions of the College: Science and Mathematics, Allied Health and Nursing, and Academic Foundations. Programming for the Division of Allied Health and Nursing included the Departments of Nursing, Dental Hygiene, EMS/Paramedics/Fire Science, Physical Therapy, Surgical Technology, Radiologic Technology, Sonography/Ultrasonography. Clinical Science Technology/Phlebotomy, and Respiratory Therapy.

The study concluded that Lorain County Community College needed instructional laboratory space on its campus to serve its growing student population.

SOLUTIONS

The facility was designed to accommodate the following programming disciplines: Biology (13,100 NSF with 8 teaching labs & support space), Chemistry (6,200 NSF with 3 teaching labs & support space), and Physics (4,750 NSF with 3 teaching labs & support space)

Ellenzweig was our associate architect leading design of the laboratory classrooms and building planning.

RESULTS

The building has earned LEED Silver status and was designed to comply with LABS 21 energy efficiency models for science facilities. In 2013 the NAIOP Northern Ohio Chapter selected the building for its Award of Excellence for Industrial Architectural Design.

“Our experience with the WMF team could not have been more positive. We found WMF/Ellenzweig to be attentive listeners, extremely knowledgeable on the subject of instructional laboratories for higher education, adept at keeping the process moving with the expansive number of ‘players’, ever-conscious of our budget, experienced in sustainable design, and willing to challenge our preconceived ideas to bring about a fresh and vital solution."
