St. Elizabeth’s of Hungary Parish

St. Elizabeth’s of Hungary Parish

Smethport, Pennsylvania

This handsome historic church in Smethport, Pennsylvania is the third generation church building for this parish on this site. Erected in 1907, the two-story building has limited accessibility for the disabled, and suffers from inadequate parish activity space. Through a master planning effort, three phases of improvement were identified for parish adoption:

(1) A new handicapped accessible entry with gathering area, restrooms and meeting room, (2) Liturgical changes within the worship room, and (3) A future parish hall addition to accommodate parish social functions.

A significant design feature of the first phase is an entry sequence that provides a central gathering area adjacent to a new landscaped courtyard. The courtyard provides outdoor contemplation and devotion space, while respecting the existing building with a “green” buffer between new and existing facilities.

Liturgically, the second phase seamlessly integrates a reconciliation room, eucharistic reservation area, and new liturgical furniture into an existing historic nave. A third phase will provide much needed parish social space that doubles for educational and adult meeting space.
