Faith United Church of Christ

State College, PA

This historic stone church, located in downtown State College directly opposite Penn State University’s main campus, was built in 1925 and patterned after an English parish church. The challenge here was to achieve handicapped accessibility in a century old building with five separate floor levels.

The solution was to respect the integrity of the existing building, both architecturally and structurally. The surgeon like removal of portions of the older building connecting church with parish hall facilitated the addition of a new central gathering area, five stop elevator and fire rated stair enclosure. Another major project objective was to ensure that the addition ‘matched’ the material (stone) of the existing church and that it all looked as if it was planned at one time. WMF researched local masons and materials to ensure a seamless transition between new and existing portions of the façade.

The reconfiguration of circulation allowed for improvements to the parish administrative offices, kitchen, parish hall and several meeting areas. New finishes will be introduced in all public areas except the main sanctuary, which remains intact.
