Soldiers’ & Sailors’ Home

The Pennsylvania Soldiers’ and Sailor’s Home has been a client of WMF for over 30 years. Numerous renovations and additions have been done at the Home in that time. The Pennsylvania Department of General Services selected WMF to design a state-of-the-art Dementia/Alzheimer’s unit.

The addition, designed as a home-like environment, incorporates the concept of houses where staff and residents have all the amenities of a home, living room, dining room, relaxation areas and Care Giver work areas that look, and at times perform, just like your kitchen at home. Most spaces are carpeted to reduce noise levels. Private resident rooms include a “memory box” at the doorway for resident personal items to stimulate memory of family and friends as well as provide a sense of “home.” Each of the living areas incorporate gas fireplaces with stone surrounds, bookshelves and residential lighting accents. The positioning of the addition provides for views and natural lighting without agitation for residents of seeing activity they cannot have access to.

Forty-four residents can occupy this newest addition and a future addition of a “house” of 20 residents is planned. Ambulatory residents are secured in a unit without seeming confined.
