Hammermill Library

Mercyhurst University

Client Goals

The initial thrust of the renovations was to accommodate the Thomas J. and Michele Ridge Collection.

Additional client goals centered around creating a “Place and Space”.

  • That synthesized traditional collegiate library space based on individual study with an emergent technologically-support group study model.
  • Incorporates a Peer-Learning Service for Students (Tutoring and Writing Center).
  • Is mindful of “emotional architecture” that creates a scholarly environment for both the library and IT functions while encouraging users to engage and collaborate.

Solutions

WMF, in collaboration with University leadership developed a 9,240 GSF zoned design solution that met the goals of the University. The zones included:

  • Additional staff office space
  • New and secure circulation desk
  • Flexible social and study area with a variety of seating and work surface options. Area can be converted to event space for special university functions.
  • IT Help Desk with counter and computer workstations.
  • Writing Center
  • Tutoring Center

“The response from students has been overwhelmingly positive.”
