Designing for Champions: How Athletic Facilities Shape Success

At WMF, we believe athletic facilities are more than just places to exercise: they are catalysts for school pride, recruitment, and community engagement. From collegiate recreation centers, to K-12 multipurpose sports complexes, and even professional training facilities, our projects are designed to foster wellness, competition, and connection.

Collegiate Recruitment Through Athletics

For colleges and universities, athletics play a considerable role in attracting students. Whether it’s a state-of-the-art recreation center or a modern training facility, prospective students see these spaces as an extension of campus culture.

  • Recruitment Magnet: Prospective athletes weigh the quality of facilities heavily in their decision-making process. Modern arenas, weight rooms, and fields signal a university’s investment in student success.

  • Campus Appeal: Even non-athletes are drawn to vibrant recreation centers, which showcase a university’s commitment to health, balance, and quality of life.

  • School Identity: Athletic spaces become landmarks of school spirit, energizing recruitment tours and strengthening alumni ties.

WMF’s work at Penn State Altoona’s Adler Athletic Complex and Penn State Behrend’s Erie Hall Recreation Center demonstrates how thoughtful design supports both recruitment and retention. These facilities not only serve athletes but also enrich the overall student experience, helping to position each campus as a destination for prospective students.

The K–12 Impact: Building Skills for Life

For K–12 schools, athletic facilities are equally transformative. More than just gyms or fields, these environments provide essential spaces for personal growth, teamwork, and wellness.

  • Health & Wellness: Physical activity is proven to boost mental health and academic performance, making high-quality facilities essential to student success.

  • Skill Building: Students develop discipline, resilience, and leadership skills through athletics that extend far beyond the playing field.

  • Community Engagement: Multipurpose spaces often serve as community hubs, hosting events that bring families and neighborhoods together.

WMF has partnered with districts and schools to bring this vision to life:

  • The Bald Eagle Fitness Center and Bald Eagle Softball Field create opportunities for training and competition, giving students the tools to grow stronger both physically and socially.

  • The Memorial Field Improvements for the State College Area School District transformed a historic athletic venue into a modern facility that serves both students and the broader community.

  • At the Kleinman Wellness Center Weight Room for Hawken School, we designed a space that empowers young athletes to build confidence, develop healthy habits, and prepare for future challenges.

Professional-Level Performance

WMF’s expertise extends beyond educational settings to the highest levels of competition. Our work with the Cleveland Guardians’ training facility demonstrates our ability to design environments that meet the rigorous demands of professional athletes. By creating high-performance spaces for conditioning, recovery, and skill development, we help athletes perform at their best while showcasing the same design excellence we bring to schools and universities.

Designing for the Future

Every sports-oriented project we take on at WMF blends functionality with inspiration. Our goal is to craft facilities that not only meet technical performance standards but also embody the energy and identity of the communities they serve.

From university recreation centers that boost recruitment to K–12 fields and gyms that nurture future leaders, and professional facilities that support elite athletes, we see athletic design as a vital part of success at every level.

At WMF, we’re proud to help schools, universities, and professional teams build champions in the classroom, on the field, and in life.
