CLIENT GOALS

Additional space was called for to satisfy the needs of this world-class collegiate music program. Recent rankings include Top 10 Liberal Arts Colleges for Music in the U.S. by Music School Central and Top 10 in the Nation Top 10 Colleges for Musical Theater by Backstage. An historic Presbyterian Church located on a contiguous piece of property to the existing Music Conservatory was available for purchase. WMF studied the church and recommended that the University purchase the building so that it could be incorporated into the Conservatory of Music.

A new opportunity for the project occurred with the inclusion of Historic Tax Credits, both at the Federal and State of Ohio levels. This involved extensive research on the buildings, seeking landmark status for two of the three buildings, and designing within the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for the treatment of Historic Properties.

SOLUTIONS

Working closely with a Historic Tax Credit Consultant, WMF renovated the existing spaces to accommodate large group areas and individual practice rooms. A powerful, new glass curtainwall entrance was designed to tie the three buildings together into one cohesive complex.

RESULTS

Perhaps the best measure of results is student success. Baldwin-Wallace students appear regionally and nationally while in school. Practical opportunities are gained through extensive performance experiences. This in turn leads to important contacts and valuable resume-enhancing experience. Baldwin-Wallace produces an annual New York Showcase attended by the industry, resulting in 100 percent of BW students being signed by top agents for the past six years.

“You all brought a smile to my face when I walked the Conservatory this evening. It wasn’t anything in particular, but rather a combination of things that made me feel very good. Walking the halls and just now noticing the mixture and variety of light fixtures and locations is but one small thing, but it shows me the incredible attention to detail you took care to inject into the building. Thanks for your professionalism, aesthetics, and friendship.”
