CLIENT GOALS

The existing Erie Hall is a 25,000 square foot building that was originally built in 1952. Deferred maintenance and shortage of space for Student Recreation and Activities led to selecting WMF to complete the preliminary program and feasibility study, and then the Sasaki Associates/WMF team to design the replacement and expansion of the facility.

SOLUTIONS

While incorporating input from the Behrend Campus, Recreational and Athletic users, and PSU OPP, the design team developed the final program, concept design and budget to align with the current and future needs of the students. The program includes:

  • 3-Court Gymnasium
  • Cardio, Sectorized, and Free Weight Fitness Areas
  • Studio spaces for Spinning, Yoga, etc.
  • Wrestling Room
  • Athletic Offices and Administration
  • Athletic Trainers' Suite
  • Locker Rooms with Team Support
  • Equipment Storage
  • Laundry Room
  • Personal Counseling Services
  • Police Services Programs

RESULTS

Programming and design will ease current overcrowding and align the facility with the future needs of the campus. The new space will help address pedestrian and vehicular traffic from the Erie Hall parking lot just north of the existing building, as well as utilize the Reed Building parking lot as a future green space.
