CLIENT GOALS

The University's goals for the project were to design a new football locker room that would inspire the home team and meet the exacting program requirements of both the Athletics Department and donor. The clients also wanted to ensure that the project be on budget and meet branding standards of the University.

SOLUTIONS

WMF worked closely with the Coach, Athletic Director, and Facilities staff to develop a new building that accommodated 100 lockers, new showers and bathroom area including a grooming station.

The building was sited behind the existing stadium and so a vomitorium (tunnel) was designed to link the locker room to the football field. This tunnel is ramped through the existing locker room building below the grandstand. It also provides a pathway for the equipment manager to access the locker room. A modest coaches locker room was also part of the new building project.

The building has also been designed and built with a structure that will accommodate a future second story where coach’s offices and teaming rooms will be added in the future.

Due to the tight budget, WMF designed an extremely efficient floor plan that accommodated all program elements in the tightest feasible footprint. Building materials included a steel frame (for the future build) masonry walls, metal panels and split faced base for longevity. Using the university colors for accent, a mix of flat and open ceiling areas, and a ‘pop’ from custom lighted lockers gives the space an exciting feeling for the team.

The old football locker room is being renovated to accommodate baseball and Track/ X-Country teams.

RESULTS

This project was completed in Spring 2021. The University has a cost-effective new building that is setting them up for expansion in the future. The team was thrilled when they took part in a ‘reveal’ of the new locker room.
