CLIENT GOALS

LORD Corporation had numerous facilities in the Erie region.  Some of which had been in operation for 80 years.  Desire for consolidating corporate, research & development, and manufacturing functions into a single facility was to improve work flow efficiencies.  LORD desired to create a world class manufacturing facility, in an environment that will enable them to showcase their extensive technology, product innovation, and quality control expertise.  Moving the manufacturing facilities and equipment required an intense phasing and coordination effort to minimize production downtime.  As a Department of Defense contractor, areas of the complex required security and separation from general visitor circulation throughout.

SOLUTIONS

WMF began with a master plan study for the 1.1 million GSF foot facility, formerly a furniture manufacturing facility, to accommodate LORD Corporations Aerospace Manufacturing and Corporate Offices.

The office and manufacturing components were previously located on separate campuses and are now married together to enhance managerial and process collaboration. The office component, representing more than 60,000 square feet, brings together many different business groups, each located in either an open or secured suite based upon levels of security clearance. Varied lighting and architectural details, such as ceiling planes and wall recesses, were incorporated along with finish accents to bring scale, interest and way finding to the large square footage.  The 250,000 sq ft of manufacturing area was designed to improve workflows resulting in production efficiencies.  WMF worked with LORD corporation to develop a phased construction implementation and relocation of existing manufacturing equipment.

The facility has multiple offices, various conferencing options, scheduled hoteling offices for traveling executives, drop-in free address spaces and strategically located lounge and breakout areas to encourage collaboration between business groups.  The exterior modifications involved adding several new windows to bring natural light into the office and manufacturing areas.

RESULTS

“The employees and management of LORD could not be more pleased with the outcome of the largest project in company history. Construction was completed under budget, and three months ahead of schedule, which then allowed relocation to proceed ahead of schedule as well. The beautiful finish and modern design elements incorporated into this expansive facility have earned LORD numerous compliments from key customers and suppliers and is already favorably impacting our ability to recruit critical technical talent. WMF through excellent results and superior service has established their team as a preferred and long term business partner of LORD Corporation. We highly recommend WMF as lead architect and construction manager for any project you may be considering.”
