The expERIEnce Children’s Museum renovation creatively transforms its existing historic structure into a dynamic, future-ready educational facility. The design preserves the historical character of the original building while integrating a new contemporary expansion and museum enhancements, including a 4,000 SF garden space developed in collaboration with the Erie Art Museum. This innovative approach balances preservation with modernity, creating an engaging space for STEAM-focused learning.
Doubling its capacity to over 25,000 SF across two stories, the renovation enhances the museum’s ability to host a variety of educational programs, interactive exhibits, and community events. Thoughtfully designed by WMF in partnership with renowned exhibit designers Jack Rouse Associates (JRA), the flexible spaces accommodate a larger amount of diverse user needs, ensuring greater accessibility and enriching experiences for all.
The project incorporates sustainable design practices, including energy-efficient lighting, eco-friendly materials, and sustainable landscaping within the new garden space. Natural light and ventilation are optimized, reducing energy consumption and highlighting the museum’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
This expansion strengthens the cultural and educational fabric of downtown Erie, attracting families, educators, and tourists. The enhanced museum, with its STEAM focus, supports local economic growth, fosters educational partnerships, and serves as a community centerpiece. Artistic sculptures, interactive outdoor exhibits, and a seamless blend of old and new architectural details create a visually stimulating environment that captivates visitors of all ages.
The Museum was awarded the 2024 Greater Erie Award for Design Excellence from Preservation Erie.
