PSU Behrend Glenhill Gardens

Penn State Behrend

Client Goals

The Pennsylvania State University wished to remove the existing 1930’s Glenhill Pool on the Behrend campus and backfill the area to make use of the space as an outdoor event and gathering space. This project aspired to cultivate an environment where creativity flourishes, cultural connections are made, and the history of the place is celebrated.

Solutions

The design process incorporated input from the students, staff, and community members, ensuring that the space would resonate with a diverse audience. The project incorporates the existing farmhouse, the original pool house, and the original garden walls that surround the pool. Each piece tells a story of the campus history and community’s heritage. These elements work hand-in-hand with the new gathering spaces, water feature and gardens to create a space that is not only visually stimulating but also rich in narrative.

Community members participate in art classes, cultural activities, and wellness programs at the site, all of which contribute to mental and physical well-being. Furthermore, the project provides unique educational spaces and opportunities for the campus. The gardens, lawn, and plazas have become a hub for student interaction and engagement. It provides a flexible space for students to use in a variety of ways and, as such, will continue to evolve and serve multiple purposes.
