CLIENT GOALS

North Hall (308 bed Co-ed residence hall) required capital maintenance and renovations.  The University wanted to preserve to look and feel of this 1937 building, while providing a finishes and bathroom refresh that would attract today's student.  Additionally all windows and residence room doors needed replaced.  As with most collegiate projects, construction activity was to be limited to the Summer to minimize impact to the campus.

SOLUTIONS

WMF assisted with implementing a two-phase (Summer 2018 and Summer 2019) project approach that allowed the building to be used during the Fall and Spring semesters. Specific improvements included:

Exterior

  • Replace all windows and courtyard doors

Lobby / First Floor

  • Restrooms renovated
  • Graduate Residence Director office improvements
  • Renovation of the Student Lounges

2nd and 3rd Floors

  • Student Rooms-New entry doors, finish upgrades and new lighting
  • Corridors-Finish upgrades, new ceilings, new lighting and replace drinking fountains
  • Common Bathrooms-All new showers, toilets, sinks, counters, partitions, accessories, finishes, lighting and ventilation
  • Semi-Private Bathrooms-Replace tub with showers, new toilet and sinks, new finishes, new lighting

RESULTS

"Because of the historic nature of North Hall, renovations required Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission review and approval. WMF took the lead in managing this process and allocated time in the design schedule to accommodate the PHMC approval process, achieved in time to accomplish construction during the summer. WMF's design approach transformed our outdated residence hall and worn apartments into attractive facilities with comfortable modem accommodations. I was pleased that WMF understood and worked toward one of the University's major goals ... improving student recruitment and retention rates."
